Watch Review – Laco Augsburg Oliv 42

Haven’t had a post in quite while. Partly because of some priorities shifted, partly, well, just been lazy.

Let’s shake this almost forgotten blog and do proper watch review.

I’ve been in watches for more than 20 years and looking back I can tell that I prefer sports and tool watches. I do appreciate haute horology, but from a distance, because of I am afraid they will not survive some of my favourite activities. Long time ago I had little pilot watch from Fortis and that was when I learned about this particular style.

In short – in 1930’s German air force Luftwaffe created specifications for a pilot watch – 55mm diameter, large numerals, soft iron case to protect it from magnetic fields. There were five manufacturers that made original pilot watches and only one of them still produce B-Uhr according to original specification – Laco.

Today I am reviewing smaller cousin of massive Beobachtuhr – Laco Augsburg Oliv 42.

Quick technical data:

Diameter: 42mm
Thickness: 11.73mm
Lug width: 20mm
Lug to lug: 50mm
WR: 50m
Movement: Laco 21 (base Miyota 821A)
Crystal: Sapphire
Case: Stainless steel, bronze coloured PVD plating, display back
Limited Edition of 250pcs
Price: 440 EUR

Laco have two pilot watch model lines – Original and Basic, watch case sizes from 39mm to 55mm and both A and B type dials (I am skipping type C which is chronometer, because of that would complicate things). Main difference between Original and Basic lines is movement, Basic line have Miyota based movements, Original have Sellita and ETA automatic and hand winding movements. So, there are plenty of watches to choose from.

In my hands is Augsburg Oliv which is a 42mm Basic line watch. It has B-Uhr type A dial and is housed in bronze PVD stainless steel case. Lugs are tapering and bends downwards thus increasing wearing comfort. Bronze plating adds very nice patina look. Bezel is very narrow and holds flat sapphire crystal. WR is 50m, which is OK, if you need watch for swimming then you have to find proper dive watch. Domed crown is quite large and very easy to operate.

Dial has very interesting hue. Laco calls it olive green, but to my eye it is a mix of dark military green and canvas colours. It is more on dark grey than green side and it works very well together with bronze hue of the case. Hands, markers and numerals are covered with SupeLuminova Old Radium and as with Superluminova you never complain about poor night time visibility. There no markings on dial except for Laco logo below triangle at 12 o’clock.

Strap is handmade pilot style with rivets and made of vintage leather. It’s colour again is a mix of dark military green and canvas. Strap is fairly thick, but supple. Buckle has the same bronze PVD plating as case and is signed.

Watch is powered by Laco 21 movement which is based on Miyota 821A. Movement offers hand winding and stop second function. By using Miyota movement Laco keeps Pilot Basic watch line prices to very accessible level and these movements perform very well on timegrapher. Movement have some decorations you can see through sapphire case back.

On a wrist. In recent years I prefer smaller watche, because of they fit better on my slim wrists and try not to venture out of my “safe” size of 38mm to 40mm. One of my concerns were that this watch might wear big – it’s a 42mm diameter, all dial watch. Surprisingly it doesn’t wear big at all. Partly that would be because of dark dial and bronze colour of watch case, that blends with hand. It feels very comfortable on wrist.

Summary. Laco Augsburg Oliv 42 is a great watch. It is legible and stands out of pilot styled watch crowd with its unusual colours. On a timegrapher it performed really well, with average rate of -3 seconds per day which is remarkable for watch in this budget.

Aranet4 tests

Wait, how much?

As of yesterday there is new most expensive wristwatch. Previous record was set almost one year ago by stainless steel (yes, I know, such low key metal) Patek Philippe ref. 1518 that was sold in Geneva for 11 million and 20k CHF.

The new record holder is watch owned by Paul Newman, called Paul Newman Rolex Daytona. It was sold for eye watering 15,5 million US dollars.

Bidding took 12 minutes and winning bid was done by telephone. I guess that means that we might never see this watch ever again, so enjoy the pictures while you can.

Heather Nova in Berlin

At first some history and background. Normally I am classic and hard rock kind of guy. I can listen anything from 60’s and 70’s all day long. Heather Nova (and some other musicians/bands) is bit of anomaly in my playlist.

I think the first Heather Nova record I heard in late 90’s or early 2000 and it was Siren. It was quite a mix of pop and rock with signature songs London Rain, Winterblue, Heart and Shoulder and many more. Later I bought also South and Storm CD’s. First one was kind of disappointing, because of it lacked that raw and unpolished energy that made her first records so exciting. Then I remember listening to some songs from Redbird, but I don’t think I have it in my collection. The first four albums were in quite heavy rotation on my ipod.

Couple of years ago I subscribed to Heather Nova newsletter and started waiting for her tour. It took 5 years until she got together full band to celebrate her breakout album Oyster. The tour consists of 13 dates played in Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and finishing in UK. Our choice was Berlin, because of concert was on Saturday and we could go there by car or by plane. At the end plane won, because of 12 hours in a car is not a fun.

Anyway, here we are in Berlin, heading for a show of musician I wanted to see at least 10 years. Concert was in Columbia Theater near old Tempelhof airport. We arrived half an hour early to find out that place is almost full. Opening for Heather was Ed Prosek. He sang for half an hour some songs and during his set venue was warming in literal sense of this word – temperature was rising, because of someone must’ve forgot to switch on ventilation. After Ed left, place was packed tighter than metro in Japan (you all remember pictures of pushing in more people than carriage can hold). Venue’s official capacity is 800, but I had a feeling that somehow they managed to squeeze in at least twice that number.

At 9 lights went off and band was on the stage. First part of the concert was Oyster in full as it was recorded, including song Blind that did not made into record. Band was seemed very relaxed and pulled through all songs like well oiled machine. It was a bit of surprise, because of last tour with full band was 5 years ago and they rehearsed only a week before tour. Concert went through in heartbeat with a little commentary about songs and history.

The band were Luke Bullen on drums, Midori Jaeger on cello and the rest band were Heather’s usual partners – Arnulf Lindner on bass and Berith Fridahl on guitar.

My personal favourites were Island, Doubled Up and Winterblue and my special thanks goes to Berith Fridahl whose guitar playing style really compliments Heather’s music going from acoustic riffs to full blown hard rock and back in a whim.

After a show Heather came for an autograph session, which was really very nice touch.

After we were back in hotel I asked my daughter if she liked and the answer was “Yes, very much!”. I guess now we wait for the next tour and hope that it will be very soon.

Some crappy phone photos and setlist follows. Will remind myself to arrange press pass and bring better camera next time.

Why, oh why?

Can someone explain how Omega went from this functional and classy looking  Seamaster GMT

17a71945b3359b76bc2134501ad6c8f8

to this monstrosity?

Couple of words what is wrong. GMT watch has a second hour hand, that travels around dial once in a 24 hours. This is useful for travellers, because of 24h hand can show hometime and regular hour hand will show local time. GMT functionality is very useful and watch manufacturers usually don’t try to hide 24h scale.

Even previous generation Seamaster GMT had 24h bezel.

Why, oh why did they decided to almost completely hide 24h scale, thus rendering otherwise beautiful watch useless as a traveler watch?

Man liekas, ka togad ar uguni nevarēja sameklēt cilvēku, kam šī kārtība patika. Sekas bija labi prognozējamas – kopš tā laika neviens ar palikšanu joslas laikā neeksperimentē.

Kāds var teikt – pārejam uz citu joslas laiku, piemēram GMT+3, kas atbilstu pašreizējam vasaras laikam. OK, tikai tad jārēķinās, ka ziemā gaišs sāks palikt nevis deviņos no rīta, bet desmitos, tumsa iestāsies nevis četros, bet piecos. Ņemot vērā pulksteņu negrozīšanas aizstāvju argumentus par viņi slābajiem bioritmiem, ko nojauc pulksteņu griešana, būtu interesanti uzzināt ko viņu bioritmi teiks par organisma atmošanos, kad saules gaismu tas ieraudzīs 4-5 stundas pēc izkāpšanas no gultas.

Tāpēc es varu tikai atkārtot iepriekšējā rakstā teikto – ņemot vērā, ka mēs esam tuvāk polam nekā ekvatoram, mūsu ieguvumi no pulksteņu griešanas ir lielāki nekā zaudējumi.

Jauns modelis – Fortis Terrestis Orchestra
